Who should apply?

Processors that manufacture products in facilities with fewer than 200 employees and that wish to significantly increase their product sales in Canada by implementing a comprehensive business or marketing plan.

To apply you must

  • Have a business or marketing plan, based on the specific market development opportunity that will be addressed through the project, that includes:
    • Market research analysis that supports entry into the specific domestic market
    • Sales targets and an assessment of other potential business impacts
    • Implementation strategy

Eligible activities and expenditures

  • Implementation of a business or marketing plan to expand or maintain domestic market access, or access a new market, that may include the following activities:
    • Brand development
    • Focus group and/or consumer studies
    • In-market product demonstrations Promotional material development
    • Product introduction campaigns for markets
    • Sales, marketing and promotional activities
    • Specially produced product samples (not from normal production) for market research, tradeshow, or specific events (e.g., lab or pilot samples made specifically for marketing purposes)
    • Packaging design
  • Shipping costs for tradeshow product samples that are not intended for re-sale
  • One-time labour costs specifically required for the project, such as contract salaries, benefits and specific per diem fees (excluding existing full- or part-time staff)
  • One-time costs for rental of facilities, processing equipment or machinery required specifically for the project
  • Travel and meal costs

Ineligible activities and expenditures

  • Product samples not related to a new product launch or a promotional event (e.g., tradeshow)
  • Product samples produced from normal production
  • Retail or food services listing fees
  • Cost of acquiring production or processing quota permits
  • Activities currently being conducted for existing products in existing markets
  • In-kind contributions
  • Activities and expenditures as detailed here

Available cost-share

35 per cent, up to a maximum of $50,000

Required documentation

  • Copy of a business or marketing plan, detailing how the project activities will allow you to expand or maintain existing domestic market access, or access a new domestic market
  • Implementation strategy
  • Quotes or proposals for all activities that will be sourced from third-party suppliers (e.g., consultants) detailing services, outcomes and costs

Merit assessment criteria

Applications will be assessed against the extent to which:

  • Business or marketing plan is fully developed
  • Sales are increased through project activities
  • Relevant business impacts are anticipated and have been quantified, such as:
    • Reduced identified risks
    • Job creation or retention
    • Increased sales and revenue
    • Increased profitability
  • Markets are increased or retained as a result of the project
  • Funding reduces business risk
  • Resources, experience and skills necessary to oversee and carry out the project are identified
  • Project work plans are clearly defined and aligned to project goals
