Who should apply?

Food processors with fewer than 100 employees that want to purchase equipment specifically designed to eliminate or reduce food safety risks and hazards.

To apply you must

  • There are no additional qualifications necessary in order to apply for this Project Category

Eligible activities and expenditures

  • Costs for food safety equipment that will reduce or eliminate food safety hazards
  • Costs for food safety equipment that support the implementation or improvement of an internationally or nationally recognized food safety program or standard
  • Costs for food safety equipment to support changing industry standards
  • Costs associated with training on the food safety equipment

Ineligible activities and expenditures

  • Equipment not related to food safety
  • Equipment that will expand production
  • Equipment to support regular maintenance
  • Consumable food safety related items (e.g., gloves, aprons, chemicals, ink, labels)
  • Multi-use items (e.g., pressure washers, water heater, vacuums, laptops, tablets, printers)
  • Capital expenses required to put a food safety program in place
  • In-kind contributions
  • Travel and meal costs
  • Activities and expenditures as detailed here

Available cost-share

35 per cent, up to a maximum of $10,000

Required documentation

  • Quote or proposal from the manufacturer detailing costs of equipment and installation

Merit assessment criteria

  • Size of the operation (priority given to operations with fewer than 100 employees)
  • Purpose of the project
  • Food safety priority (high, medium or low) of the food product
  • Activities impacted by the acquisition of equipment
  • Current food safety program certification status relative to national or international program standards (e.g., Safe Quality Food, British Retail Consortium)
  • Ability of the equipment to improve food safety and control risks
